Shripal Morakhia is running out of two resources; time and money.
The first, because he is prone to boredom. No venture holds his attention longer than six years (“The moment it starts turning into a business, I prefer to sell,” says the year-old). The second is loose change he made in through a Rs 1, cr deal when he sold investment banking unit SSKI and online share trading platform Sharekhan to IDFC and CitiVenture respectively.
What’s rarely in short supply are ideas - a toy library for India, the world’s largest dinosaur park for Ahmedabadis, and a grand multimedia Ramleela that introduces chariotborne visitors to Ram rajya ensconced in a 75, sq ft air-conditioned dome.
Broking, investment banking, film production (Bend it like Beckham and Monsoon Wedding), publishing (Amar Chitra Katha) - Morakhia has experienced it all. For now, it’s the augmented simulated reality games arcade, Smaaash Entertainment that’s the focus of his obsession. How much did it cost him?
“Don’t even ask.
Only a mad man invests that sort of money.”
We catch up with the compulsive entrepreneur at his Mahim office.
What does it take to be a successful entrepreneur?
See, you become one because your body and mind are made for it. The challenges that come with it don’t take a toll on you.
It’s the environment - when people aren’t understanding or appreciative - that can.
Has Mumbai contributed to your entrepreneurial spirit?
As an entrepreneur, I can’t leave Mumbai. I love its pulse, the structure. But do I want my grandchildren to live here? No. It’s a decaying city.
You started out in stockbroking.
Was it exciting?
I was executive assistant to the President of the New York Stock Exchange. I hadn’t planned to return to India but my father passed away. My grandfather, Kantilal Ishwarlal was one of the founding fathers of the modern Bombay Stock Exchange. But stockbroking was nascent, hardly enjoyable.
I spent the first 10 years doing odd jobs. That’s the period I’d like to forget.
But you did start a stockbroking and investment banking outfit.
Yes. In , when foreign investment was flooding in, my brother and I revived the family business, set up investment banking unit SSKI, and then the online trading platform Sharekhan.
It was tough because we didn’t have the financial muscle to run that large an organisation.
Why did you suddenly exit financials?
It was , and I said, let me sell it all off. I even handed my film production unit to my CEO.
But exiting films and Amar Chitra Katha must have been heart-wrenching.
I retained Amar Chitra Katha because I was passionate about it.
We grew up reading about Superman, but what about Ram and Hanuman? Sita is bigger than Catwoman. Unfortunately, my shareholders didn’t believe in my multimedia dream, so I sold my stake to Kishore Biyani.
Was it your struggle with cancer that made you want to take it slow?
No. I did feel, ‘why me?’, but then I was up and running.
An entrepreneur always bounces back.

Boehrer suggests he was pursuing an "overall investment strategy aimed at controlling as much as possible of the local grain market ", a strategy that was highly successful. English poet and playwright — Shakespeare is widely considered to be the greatest writer in the English language. The reason for the special licence became apparent six months later with the baptism of their first daughter, Susanna , on 26 MayI exited because I believe financial services is the worst business to be in. No matter if you are good or bad, greed takes over.
There is so much money in the market. Let me use this analogy. There are a host of lovely women around you. You resist, and then one day you fall to their charm. I had played far too long with money.
Which is why you turned to gaming?
We started Smaaash with a simple idea. How do we make people discover their latent playing skills? Here, you play cricket while facing balls hurled by a machine that will deliver them to you the same way Malinga does. You are playing the best. We are launching an outdoor version soon, and expanding to five Indian cities.
I will take it to Dubai in , and we are discussing it with partners in the US and Canada. It’s going to be marvellous.
And Sachin Tendulkar is a partner.
Yes, he’s a strong minority shareholder; one of the finest gentlemen. I made a cold call to him.
Biography of william shakespeare pdf: Tolkien, William Shakespeare, J. Shakespeare was survived by his wife Anne and by two daughters, Susanna and Judith. The theory of other writers to Shakespeare only emerged centuries after the publishing of the First Folio. To this day, countless theater festivals around the world honor his work, students memorize his eloquent poems and scholars reinterpret the million words of text he composed.
I didn’t know him from Adam. We gave him the idea, and he said, I’m on.
What do you do when you aren’t working?
Most of my time is spent developing new concepts. The latest idea is a multimedia Ramleela park. Everything is ready.
I only need a mad man like myself, with a passion for religion, to fund it.
So, how do you unwind?
With my family. I have a wife, daughter and two grandchildren. I don’t drive or drink.
At the most, I might go out for a movie with my wife and then for a meal to Swati Snacks. That is the only thing I enjoy doing. But I travel a lot, visit technology, consumer and electronic fairs. Coming up is a toy fair in Nuremberg that’s going to help me start a toy library in India.
